Computer Desk Posture Checklist to Avoid Back & Neck Pain
When you sit at a computer desk all day, you’re at a much higher risk of developing neck and back pain, especially if you aren’t maintaining proper posture. By making some simple daily adjustments to your posture and your workstation, you can avoid back and neck pain. Follow the tips on this posture checklist, and then make an appointment with our San Antonio chiropractors for more posture correction tips.
Sit Properly in Your Chair
Sit with your back against the back of the chair, and your feet flat on the ground. Use a lumbar back pillow or mesh back support if needed. If your feet can’t reach the floor, use a footrest.
Be Mindful About Maintaining Posture
Throughout the workday, remind yourself to maintain proper posture. When you feel yourself start to slouch, straighten up and sit properly again. Once you do this often enough, you will get into the habit of using proper posture.
Adjust Your Computer Screen
The center of your computer screen should be at eye level. If it isn’t, use a monitor stand to raise your computer monitor up, or tilt the screen downward if necessary. If your screen is too high or too low, your head won’t remain level while working and you’ll end up developing neck pain and stiffness.
Make Your Workstation More Ergonomic
An ergonomic workstation is one that is arranged so that everything you need is at arm’s reach, so that you don’t have to keep bending, stretching, leaning, or lifting to use objects or equipment throughout the day. It also involves using adjustable, ergonomic work equipment, like a sit-stand desk, a curved keyboard, a monitor stand, or a gel wrist pad.
Stretch Regularly
Getting up, walking around, and stretching every hour or so will keep your muscles from stiffening up. If you notice that your neck, shoulders, or lower back have started feeling stiff, get up and stretch your muscles briefly.
